Statement
The subjects
of my paintings are objects of everyday life: the places and things
that surround us every day. Familiar objects
in which I recognize an inherent beauty in subtle details – the
beauty of the ordinary. That certain way a shadow drapes across a surface.
A reflection in a
window. I do not choose my subjects; rather I let myself
be drawn to them. It is only after I complete a painting that I am able
to analyze
the work and see its relevance. In particular, I find
myself attracted to what is old, what is worn, what is "lived" – derelict
buildings, transitional places, flea market treasures.
Years of exposure to time have a way of imprinting what I feel is a certain
sense of individuality,
grace, and beauty in the objects I paint – a sense of longing that
very much parallels our very fragile existence on this
planet.
I try to capture
my subjects as they appear to me – even if only
a passing glimpse from a car window. It is not my intention to tell a
whole story in my work; instead I want the viewers to enter the space
and ultimately find their own story within the work. I love to paint
and do so most every day. Each painting brings new challenges and insights.
It is not always important to me "what" I paint; rather the
act itself serves the entire purpose. I expect that
it is much like life in that it is more about the journey, rather than
the end. |
